Rabat, the Ultimate Heritage Destination

Twenty Centuries of History...

The earliest human traces in Rabat date back to the 8th century BC, on the present-day site of Chellah. This strategic location was first established as a trading post by Phoenician navigators, much like other settlements founded along the Moroccan coastline. The city later came under Carthaginian influence, although its economic and commercial importance in the region during that period remains partially obscured by history.

This protohistoric past forms the first chapter of a city whose development would span nearly three millennia.

To visit Rabat is to immerse oneself in a true open-air history book, where every monument, every stone tells a page of Morocco’s rich history and its many influences. It is also to discover how a modern capital has managed to preserve its historic soul while firmly embracing the 21st century.
